Psychotherapy & 12-Step Work
/I have trained and taught courses in psychodynamic psychotherapy, self-psychology, and emotional bodywork. I also have extensive knowledge and experience with 12-Step programs.
As a psychotherapist who has worked in the field of addiction recovery for the past 20 years, I offer an intuitive understanding of how the 12-Step program and depth psychotherapy can work together in the recovery process.
Sometimes psychotherapy does not progress because the client is trapped in an addictive cycle which may require 12-Step work. Similarly, someone in a 12-Step program can benefit from depth psychotherapy to explore and understand the underlying dynamics of a certain issue.
The needs of a person in recovery vary from individual to individual and present naturally as one engages in psychotherapy and/or 12-Step work. A client can benefit from both processes. Ultimately, a collaborative blend of psychotherapy and 12 Step work can be highly effective in developing lasting change in one’s life. It is important that an addiction therapist has experience, sensitivity, and training in both modalities.
